EGR System / Exhaust Gas Recirculation System – How Does It Work?

In the video, we will learn about the basics of the EGR environmental system (Exhaust Gas Recirculation system) for gasoline and diesel internal combustion engines. The following topics will also be covered: EGR valve, EGR sensor, types of exhaust gas recirculation (external and internal), and the algorithm and principle of the EGR system's operation. In our online video course "Car Anatomy" there are more informational videos in 3D animation

Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is used to reduce the levels of NOx emitted by the engine. By recirculating exhaust gases into the engine’s cylinder, a percentage of the air is replaced with CO2. This process lowers the combustion temperature due to the reduced amount of oxygen which, in turn, reduces the amount of NOx formed. EGR is an efficient process for reducing NOx levels. It is a proven technology in on- and off-highway applications.

EGR works by routing, cooling and feeding a controlled amount of exhaust gas created during combustion back into an engine's air intake system. This process dilutes the air and fuel mixture that enters the combustion chambers, which reduces the engine's peak combustion temperature.
